Caring for your fresh-cut flowers
At Johnston’s Flowers, freshness is our top priority.
We visit flower wholesalers several times each week and carefully prepare every stem—cleaning, trimming, and storing flowers in cold temperatures with the cleanest water possible. These steps help ensure your arrangement arrives vibrant, fragrant, and ready to be enjoyed for many days.
Refresh the water right away
As soon as you receive your flowers, empty the vase and refill it with fresh, cold water. We trim the stems and refresh the water before each delivery, but the water level is kept slightly lower during transport.
Change the water every 2–3 days
Replace the water regularly with cold, clear water. Each time, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle using a clean knife or sharp scissors.
Remove leaves below the waterline
Leaves sitting in water can cause bacteria to form, which shortens the life of your flowers.
Use a small amount of flower food
Add just a pinch of the enclosed flower food to fresh water.
Please read the instructions on the flower food packet and follow them properly.
Keep flowers in a cool place
Avoid placing arrangements in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or in very warm rooms.
Remove fading blooms
Some flowers naturally fade faster than others. Remove delicate blooms as they wilt to help the remaining flowers continue looking their best.
How to care for your flowers
To help your flowers last even longer at home, we recommend these care tips!
If something doesn’t seem right
If your flowers begin wilting or browning within 2–3 days of receiving them, please contact us. This is not typical for Johnston’s Flowers arrangements, and we’re happy to help.
Please contact us within 3 days of purchase with feedback and photos.
We reserve the right to determine if flowers are eligible for replacement on a case-by-case basis.
Vase Recycling
If you need to refrigerate your flowers, keep them between 35–45°F (2–7°C).
Avoid storing them near fruits such as apples, bananas, melons, pears, or peaches, as these release ethylene gas, which can shorten the life of your flowers.
